Synopsis

Alcestis sacrifices herself for her husband, Admetus, on the condition that he never re-marry. Admetus agrees and promises to lead a life of solemnity. Soon after though, Heracles arrives at the palace, not knowing of Alcestis's fate. Admetus bades his servants not mention the tragedy and plays the hospitable host - breaking his vow to Alcestis.
