Synopsis

Newland Archer is a gentleman in Old New York society, where one must adhere to strict social codes or risk ostracism. Archer is married to May, an unimaginative, shallow young woman whose upbringing has made her the perfect, inoffensive wife. However, Newland becomes enthralled with the independence of May's scandalous cousin, the Countess Olenska.
